Chapter 1 )
THEY were down for the MTV World Stage and are back again a mere three months later. Is it our water?
Probably not.

Looking tired and a little edgy but still retaining their good-natured and accommodating attitude, Tyson and Nick were busy signing merchandise when this reporter walked into the interview room.

First things first. What was up with that cover of Britney Spears’ Womanizer which the boys did for Pepsi a while back? “We didn’t actually want to do that song, but it had to be a ‘Top 20’ hit so…” explained Tyson, rolling his eyes.  )

Rise (and screams) of the A.A.R.MY

THE diehards were there since 9am (with doors opening at 6pm). By 8pm, a 15,000 strong crowd packed
Carpark A of Bukit Jalil in anticipation of the The All-American Reject’s (AAR) second concert in Malaysia since MTV World Stage in August – courtesy of DiGi Music Live.

An interesting fact – this was the band’s biggest concert ever, as the headlining act (previously playing to 40,000 strong crowds but merely as the opening act).

Luckily, the cool weather and slight drizzle eased the wait for fans (who showed their displeasure with screams of “why are we waiting?”) as the opening acts only kicked off at 8.30pm. (...)

However, the wait was soon over as AAR took to the stage at 9.40pm riding on a wave of hysterical screams (that would be from the female teeny-boppers) and roars (from the rest of the crowd).

“Happy Halloween where we’re from!” Tyson yelled out, ~~ )

Review: AAR in London - Kerrang!

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 12:39 PM
Ok - firstly, I'm not entirely sure what tag to use for this, and secondly, I need someone with a scanner to scan the photos for me (to give you an incentive, there's an utterly adorable pic of Nick and Ty), but ne'ertheless! After nearly a month, I've finally found a review for October 14th at Shepherd's Bush.

... and you know you're obsessed when you buy a magazine you rarely ever read, just because it's got your favourite band it. *facepalm*

Feverish pitch: AAR rocks KL

GHOULS, vampires and zombies were out milling about at Car Park A, Bukit Jalil, last Saturday night but the scariest thing about the DiGi Music LIVE All-American Rejects concert was probably the mad frenzy of the audience.

More than 10,000 teens and young adults impeccably recited the band’s song lyrics in an almost-chanting manner the moment all four members of the band bounded on stage and burst into their hit song and anthem for persevering through difficulties, Move Along.

It was probably a good thing the on-and-off drizzle had stopped by then to not cause any unfortunate slippage – not that it deterred the thousands of youths who completely let loose by dancing and screaming wildly. review of the show )

I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Nick Wheeler, guitarist with All-American Rejects on October 19, 2009. The band were in the UK finishing up a sold-out tour. They will return to the US in November for a co-headlining tour with Taking Back Sunday. The band are also celebrating the release of the video for their current single "I Wanna."

Bill: How is your day going?

Nick: It's ok, slept until about one o'clock I suppose, did some laundry. It's been a productive day off.

Bill: Tyson had a recent injury that pulled you off the road. Is everything set for November?

Nick: Actually, we're over in the UK and we're back on the road right now. Yeah, we went home for two weeks, but I guess it was kind of a bittersweet blessing in disguise. We came back and the shows have been great, and everybody's been refreshed. We're kickin' arse out here. So yeah, November's a go.

Bill: When you're out on the stage performing, is there anything in particular about All-American Rejects you want the audience to feel or take with them when they leave?  )

The band name picked by the All-American Rejects is darn misleading. After all, there's nothing about these guys that makes them so-called "rejects." The Oklahoma-based group makes classic power-pop, both charming and fresh, and they guys have sold over two million albums since 1999.

Yes, AAR is purpose-built for the young, alt-rock crowd. Those fans will have the chance to see the band Tuesday at the MSU Concert Auditorium. It's a co-headlining show with Taking Back Sunday. (See story, Page XX.)

We chatted with guitarist Mike Kennerty, who had a hand in writing hits like "Dirty Little Secret," "Move Along" and "Swing, Swing."

• NOISE: What was it like breaking out of your small town of Stillwater?
Kennerty: It was very cool. We were just some kids content on playing shows and getting by as meagerly as we could, so getting to this point is awesome. It was just a crazy experience to be thrust into the music world and to play huge venues and get on TV shows, and we wouldn't trade it for anything.

• What's your favorite thing about this whole experience?  )

Pardon the cliche, but the third time was the charm for The All-American Rejects.

Not that their first two albums were anything to scoff at.

The band’s debut, the self-titled, “The All-American Rejects,” originally released in 2002, went on to sell over one million records in the United States and was certified platinum by the RIAA.

The band’s second album, “Move Along,” released in 2005, brought even more mainstream success, with singles among the year’s tops. The album went on to move over two million copies in the United States.

Then came the time to record that third take. Perhaps plagued by success, the group went into the studio feeling a little stale before finally succumbing to a brand new approach to recording.

That result, 2008’s “When the World Comes Down,” brought the group its first No. 1 single and greatly exposed the band in Europe, where it’s currently touring. Guitarist Matt Mike (there, fixed it for you) Kennerty took a few minutes while in Germany to talk to us about the new record in advance of their Nov. 4 Morgantown appearance with Taking Back Sunday and Anberlin.

Graffiti: Let’s start with what the band’s been up to recently.

Kennerty: Right now we are in Europe doing a tour. This is our third time this year and each time it’s been getting bigger.

Graffiti: Is this your first time in Europe or have you toured there before?  )
